The beamed upstairs bedroom at Owls End with a super king bed and a single day bed

Owls End: a 16th century barn for up to eight

Owls End is the largest of our three cottages. It works well for two families sharing, or for a group of friends, as the super king beds can be made up as singles. When a group books all three cottages, it sits in the middle and tends to become the place where everyone gathers.

Inside

The ground floor is one spacious, open-plan room. The farmhouse-style oak kitchen is well equipped and sits on a traditional brick floor, and next to it there's a separate dining room large enough to seat all eight of you.

The sitting area has an oak floor, soft furnishings and a wood burner that's ideal for winter evenings. French doors open onto an enclosed patio that's safe for children and dogs, with its own private hot tub and charcoal barbecue looking out over the historic moat.

Bedrooms and bathrooms

Through the kitchen there's a double room with a 5ft bed and an en-suite shower room. It's suitable for guests who need accessible accommodation and is rated Mobility 1 under the National Accessible Scheme. You can reach it through its own ground-level door from outside, or from the kitchen by two steps with a handrail.

Upstairs, the large family room sleeps up to three, with a 6ft super king bed that can be split into two singles on request (zip and link) and a single day bed. It has an impressive beamed ceiling with the original flywheel that was used to mill grain on the farm in the 1800s, and the view over the moat is quite something. It's our favourite room in the barn.

The second upstairs room is another lovely double, also with a 6ft super king bed that can be split into two singles and a single day bed. Next to these bedrooms there's a large family bathroom for a relaxing soak, and a modern, separate shower room.

The history of the barn

The main barn dates from the 16th century and has been used for many things over the years, including housing cattle and pigs. The brick section was added in the 18th century for milling wheat and barley into animal feed. Guests often comment on the beams, and wonder how difficult it must have been to convert. You can read how the barns became cottages, and the story of the Hall and its moat, on our History page, and find out about our family and the land around you on The Farm page.

Days out from Owls End

Southwold's pier, sandy beach and lighthouse are about an hour and twenty minutes away, and Lavenham's crooked medieval houses only twenty. Closer to home, you can walk your own alpaca at Hilly Ridge, two minutes from our gate. Our Things to do page has all our favourite days out, places to eat and walks, with drive times from the cottages.

Recently updated

Over the last few years we've fitted a new kitchen and a new hot tub, refurbished the downstairs bathroom and knocked two bedrooms into one to create a larger main bedroom. The whole cottage has been redecorated as well.

Good to know

There are two small steps at the front door, where we can fit a ramp if you let us know in advance. One well-behaved dog is welcome for a £25 supplement, and if you'd like to bring more, just ask us.

Quiet village with good mobile signal. Cottages were beautiful, and rooms were spacious.
