We booked out the whole site for a family weekend away for the second year running and once again were blown away by the accommodation and attention to detail.

Why three cottages work well for a group

Because the three cottages sit around one courtyard, each household has its own kitchen, sitting room and hot tub, while everyone else is only a few steps away. Early risers can make a start on the day without waking anyone, and grandparents often choose Willow Cottage for a little peace and quiet. The cottages were once barns on our working farm, and you can read how they came to be on our History page, and meet our family on The Farm page.

A table for the whole party

One of the questions we're asked most often is whether everyone can eat together, and the answer is yes. We'll set up an extra table and chairs in Tithe Barn before you arrive, at no extra charge, so that your whole party can sit down to the same meal. It seats 16 comfortably and all 19 of you at a squeeze. Just ask when you book, or let us know at least a week before you arrive.

All four super king beds can be made up as two singles, so if you send us your bed plan we'll have everything ready before you arrive. Cots and high chairs are available in every cottage at no extra charge.

Comfortable for all ages

Every cottage has a bedroom on the ground floor. In Tithe Barn both bathrooms are downstairs as well, and Willow Cottage is all on one level. We can fit a ramp at any of the front doors, and a toilet frame and seat riser are available if you ask us beforehand.

For younger children there's a fenced playground with swings, a climbing frame and a slide, and each cottage has its own fenced patio. The moat is deep with steep banks and the path beside it isn't fenced, so please keep a close eye on young children near the water. The patios themselves are childproof.

From the youngest at 12 to the oldest at 78 everyone was catered for and entertained.

Things to do together

  • Relax in the hot tubs. Each cottage has its own, so there's no need to take turns
  • Hold a tournament in the games room, which has pool and table tennis (both free to play), table football (bring some 20p pieces) and a chalkboard for the scores
  • Play football or cricket on the grass in front of the Hall
  • Walk the footpaths across the farm, or follow them for three miles to the pubs in Bildeston
  • Light the wood burners in Owls End and Tithe Barn, with firewood included
  • Barbecue on your own patio (you'll need to bring charcoal)

Days out for the whole group

When you're ready to head out, there's something for every age: walking your own alpaca at Hilly Ridge, the animals at Jimmy's Farm, open-water swimming at Alton Water or a stroll around Lavenham. Our Things to do page lists our favourite places, with drive times from our gate and where to eat out as a group.

Food and eating out

All the major supermarkets deliver here, and many groups book a delivery for the evening they arrive. Use our postcode, IP7 7JX, and add your name and the name of your cottage to the delivery notes.

If you'd like a meal out, it's worth booking before you travel, because tables for larger groups are hard to find at short notice. We'd suggest The Bildeston Crown for a special dinner, the King's Head in Hadleigh for a Sunday roast and the Six Bells at Preston for good pub food.

When to come

Our quietest weeks are from early June until the school holidays begin. If your group isn't tied to term dates, that's when you're most likely to find all three cottages free.

“Wattisham is our home from home, we love spending time together here every March and October”

A few things we ask

This is a working farm and our home, so we ask all our guests to follow a few simple rules.

  • We welcome one dog per cottage, for a £25 supplement, and we ask that dogs are kept on a lead around the farm. Please ask us if you'd like to bring more
  • Please don't bring fireworks or candles
  • Smoking is allowed on the patios and courtyard only
  • The farmyard is out of bounds, as the machinery can be dangerous even when it's parked
  • After 10pm, please keep music down and stay out of the hot tubs, out of consideration for our neighbours and other guests
